Overall Situation

· On January 12, 1pm, a phreatic or steam-driven eruption begun in several points inside the Taal Volcano’s main crater. An ash column 10-15 km high was generated. It belched a 50,000-feet tall ash cloud, which blanketed parts of Metro Manila and nearby areas.

· Alert Leverl 2, 3, and then 4 were swiftly raised.

· Flights to and from the Ninoy Aquino International airport were also halted as ash reached its runways and ramps.

· On January 13, as of 5:00 am, there have been a total of 75 volcanic earthquakes in the Taal area. Phivolcs said 32 of these earthquakes were felt with intensities ranging from Intensity II to V in Tagaytay City; Cabuyao City in Laguna; and municipalities of Talisay, Alitagtag, Lemery, and Bauan in Batangas. The quakes were likely caused by magma moving upward towards the crater of Taal.

· Ashfall has spread not just in Batangas but also to other parts of the CALABARZON region, as well as Metro Manila and Central Luzon. This triggered suspension of classes and government work.

· It remains under Alert Level 4 as it spewed lava fountains amid the threat of a hazardous eruption. Phivolcs said that the spewing of lava is called a magmatic eruption.

· The magmatic eruption was recorded from 2:49 am to 4:28 am today.

· The volcano could spew pyroclastic currents, a dangerous mix of stream, gas and ash. Some particles up to 2.5 inches in diameter, larger than a golf ball, had also reportedly fallen in areas around Taal Lake.

· A total of 966 families (7,742 persons) are taking temporary shelter in 38 evacuation centers.
