Situation Overview

Since the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised Alert Level 3 on 08 June 2023, the alert level remains as of 20 June in Mayon Volcano located in the province of Albay in Bicol Region. This means it is currently in a high level of unrest due to the presence of magma at the crater and the potential for a dangerous eruption within weeks or days is possible.
From 20 to 21 June 2023, there is a very slow lava flow from the crater summit of Mayon Volcano. There is also collapsed debris on the Mi-isi (south) and Bonga (southeastern) gullies. PHIVOLCS recorded two (2) volcanic earthquakes by the Mayon Volcano Network.

Affected Populations

In its June 21 report, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said that a total of 39,057 people, or 10,171 families from the communities of Bacacay, Camalig, Daraga, Guinobatan, Ligao, Malilipot, Sto. Domingo, and Tabaco have been displaced.

Despite risk warnings, there are still reports of residents checking on their livestock and some choosing to stay. Many of the residents also go back to their farmlands to harvest vegetables and other crops to sell while in the evacuation center for additional income.

Based on the results of Damage, Needs, Capacities Assessment conducted by TABI, evacuated individuals approximately reached 18,000 persons sheltered in 25 designated evacuation centers and private residences of their relatives of the Albay local government unit (LGU). There is still an on-going increase of evacuees in other barangays due to the continuous lava flow and the volcano’s high state of unrest.

Displaced people are still in need of immediate assistance such as food and health kits.

Emergency Response Efforts

1. CDRC and its regional partner continues to monitor the situation and issue situation reports.
2. Our regional partner Tarabang para sa Bicol, Inc. (TABI) convened an emergency meeting with its volunteers on 09 June 2023. TABI also began coordinating with the LGU – Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office (APSEMO) to assess the situation. TABI and its volunteers continue to identify the demands, needs, and capacity of the affected communities.
3. TABI, together with Tarabang Youth Volunteers (TYVs), Sining Banwa, and Disaster Preparedness Committee (DPC) of Tandarora, Guinobatan, Albay provided hot meals to 2,404 individuals from barangays Tandarora and Maninila who are staying at the evacuation shelter in Guinobatan Community College.
4. Psychosocial and art sessions were provided to particular groups of evacuees as support to their mental, emotional, and moral state during their stay in the evacuation centers.
5. TABI and CDRC have opened a “Call for Donation” for the families affected by the volcanic eruption in Albay.
6. CDRC coordinates with emergent groups who have already started their initiatives to help the communities affected by the mandatory evacuation, with the aim of strengthening these survivor and community-led responses through the provision of micro grants.

1. Immediate needs of the affected individuals include food, drinking water, face masks (KN95), and hygiene kits (including women’s essentials).
2. Bathroom essentials (pail/bucket and dipper) for the families staying inside the evacuation centers.
