The 6.9 magnitude earthquake that shook Negros Oriental on February 6, 2012, left 39 people killed and 71 others missing, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported.
As of February 10, PHIVOLCS recorded 1428 aftershocks, 87 of which were felt. There were also unusual sea level changes reported right after the earthquake in Negros and Cebu island coasts.
The earthquake triggered landslides in La Libertad and Guihulngan in Negros Oriental; and in Sibonga and Alegria in Cebu. These landslides caused most of the reported deaths.
Meanwhile, also in La Libertad, houses were damaged due to the rise of water along the shoreline. Two bridges (in La Libertad and Jimalalud) also collapsed, while 2,993 houses were damaged because of the earthquake.
The total number of population affected has reached 21,076 families or 93,397 persons in 106 baranggays, 7 municipalities, 2 cities and 1 province in Region VII.
There are 5,997 families or 30,005 persons staying in 46 evacuation centers. Another 11,791 families or 58,935 people, who are also in need of assistance, are staying outside evacuation centers.
The affected families are in need of drinking water, medicines, tents, food supplies, clothing, blankets, mosquito nets, hygiene kits, and kitchen utensils.
