Typhoon Pablo, the 16th storm to ravage the Philippines this year, made landfall on the eastern coast of Mindanao early Tuesday of December 4. It brought rain and strong winds that toppled trees and power lines, destroyed houses and roads, and caused floods and mudslides that forced more than 300,000 to seek refuge in evacuation centers.
Typhoon Pablo came after tropical storm Sendong (Washi) hit Mindanao in December last year, killing more than 1,200 and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless.
The death toll from Pablo rose to 714 Monday, December 10, mostly due to flash floods and mudslides. Several of the dead came from the town of New Bataan in Compostela Valley, which was severely affected by flash floods. Flood waters reportedly came down from the mountain slopes, bringing with it mud, logs and rocks. Fallen trees and rocks also made it hard for rescuers to immediately reach the area. In the nearby province of Davao Oriental, several people were also killed in the towns of Cateel, Baganga and Boston.
The other fatalities were from Surigao del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental and Siquijor.
As of December 10, the total number of population affected in 30 provinces of Regions IV-B, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII and CARAGA is 486,554 families or 5,408,900 persons, the NDRRMC said. This figure covered 1,926 barangays, 249 municipalities, and 37 cities.
The total number of population still staying inside the 134 evacuation centers is 25,812 families or 116,404 persons.
