Taal Volcano Eruption Situation Report #2 January 14, 2020 10:40 pm

Overall Situation
·        As of January 14, despite fewer emissions seen from the Taal Volcano, the frequent volcanic earthquakes coupled with fissures or cracks indicate that a hazardous eruption remains possible. Phivolcs said the surface activity of Taal Volcano’s main crater slightly eased, though there is still continuous magmatic and hydrovolcanic activity.

·       Aside from the lava fountains and ash plumes, fissures or cracks have been spotted on the ground in the province of Batangas. In particular, Phivolcs said fissures were observed in these areas: Lemery – Sinisian, Mahabang Dahilig, Dayapan, Palanas, Sangalang, and Poblacion; Agoncillo – Pansipit; San Nicolas – Poblacion 1, Poblacion 2, Poblacion 3, and Poblacion 5.

·       There have also been a total of 335 volcanic earthquakes in the Taal area. The volcano remains under Alert Level 4, which means a hazardous eruption is imminent or may occur within days to hours.

·       Phivolcs said flashes of volcanic lightning were also observed, along with new vents from where lava fountains and steam plumes have been spotted. Batangas was placed under a state of calamity.

·       Agricultural losses are mounting. There is ashfall not only in Batangas but also in other parts of the CALABARZON region, as well as in Metro Manila and Central Luzon.

·       Classes remain suspended in some areas. Partial operations in the Ninoy Aquino International Airport resumed.

Reports on Affected Populations
·       A total of 12,033 families (from yesterday’s 966) or 49,240 persons (from yesterday’s 7,742) are taking temporary shelter in 166 evacuation centers (from yesterday’s 38).
