Taal Volcano Eruption Situation Report #3 January 16, 2020 8:30 pm

Overall Situation
• As of January 16, Taal volcano erupted short-lived dark gray ash plumes 500 meters to 800 meters high, that dispersed ash southwest to west of the main crater. Activity in the past 24 hours has generally waned to weak emission of steam-laden plumes 700 meters high that dispersed ash to the southwest.
• The Philippine Seismic Network plotted a total of 566 volcanic earthquakes. One hundred seventy-two of these registered at Magnitudes M1.2-M4.1 and were felt at Intensities I-V. Such intense seismic activity likely signifies continuous magmatic intrusion beneath the Taal edifice, which may lead to further eruptive activity.
• Sulfur dioxide emission was measured at an average of 4,186 tons/day.
• Alert Level 4 still remains in effect in Taal Volcano. This means that hazardous explosive eruption is possible within hours to days.
Reports on Affected Populations
• A total of 26,294 families (from yesterday’s 12,033) or 121,455 persons (from yesterday’s 49,240) are taking temporary shelter in 373 evacuation centers (from yesterday’s 166). (Source: Batangas PDRRMO).
• A total of P74,549,300 worth of damages to agriculture was incurred in the provinces of Batangas and Cavite.
